One of Unbound’s core missions is to encourage a love of reading and writing in all ages, especially the young, and so we take our children’s programming very seriously.
In 2018, through our "Authors in the Schools" project, we brought eight different authors into twelve different schools in the Columbia Public Schools District, and fulfilled our ambition of putting a writer into at least one classroom in every grade from Kindergarten through 12th Grade. Over the course of the festival, more than 3,500 children had an opportunity to hear an author speak. Our keynote speaker was YA author and activist Gabby Rivera, who was simply amazing.
We have already begun making plans for next year's student events. We're planning to expand the "Authors in the Schools" events still further. One of our plans is to bring an author (we can't say who yet!) to Columbia earlier in the year to participate in a full range of activities and talks - and we're hoping to include students' parents in that experience, too.
Watch this space for announcements about children's-related activities!
Much of our programming for the festival's children's events is made possible by generous grants from the Assistance League of Mid-Missouri, the Friends of the Daniel Boone Regional Library, and the Columbia Public Schools Foundation.
